What Are Back Support Cushions

Also known as lumbar support cushions, back support cushions help to lessen or remove the strain on your back while at the same time allowing you to maintain good posture.

Coccyx Cushion

This does not really provide much support but instead slightly raises your back relative to your knees and thus gives you good posture. It also features a cut away section so that your coccyx is not under pressure. This is especially helpful for people who have suffered an injury to this delicate area in the past.

Lumbar Roll

A lumbar roll is a sausage-shaped cushion made of soft but firm material. By placing it in the small of your back while sitting down, it forces your back to arch backwards while at the same time providing support from below.

This is a very basic type of back support cushion but gives excellent relief.

You can even make your own rudimentary version of a lumbar roll by rolling up an old towel and placing it in the same position. However, I strongly advise you to invest a few bucks in proper support for your back.

Posture Curve Back Support Cushion

These are a curved type cushion that wrap around the entire lower back. They have a hollowed out appearance where they meet your back and are most commonly used when sitting down in an office chair.

They are usually made from some sort of foam. Memory foam is becoming a very common filler material for back support cushions these days – it retains its shape for longer than standard foam and it moulds itself to the shape of your back but you do pay a small premium for these privileges.

Lumbar Pad

A lumbar pad does not have a hollowed out appearance like the posture curve type cushions. Instead, it has the opposite appearance and presents a large amount of padded foam material into the lumbar region of the back for maximum support.

Especially if you have only lower back pain, you may find this type of cushion to be a better alternative. Even if you do, if you think it has been brought on by bad posture then you would be better off with a posture curve cushion.

In The Car

The above cushions can also be used in the car but there are also heated versions to give added pain relief. These are usually powered via the cigarette lighter.
Also available are mesh type back supports. These are fixed to the car seat and give basic back support but also allow your sweat to be wicked away easily which can be handy on long journeys.
